Exhilarating, complicated, emotionally draining, and mentally trying, The Kid, a sequel of sorts to Sapphire's first novel, Push, is a compelling, polarizing, confrontational read. The first-person, stream-of-consciousness narrative puts the reader right inside the protagonist's head, living every moment exactly as he sees it. It's not always reality, but it's always his reality. The Kid is often bleak, with nary a light at the end of the tunnel, but Abdul is a character whose struggle, much like his mother’s in Push, is captivating and unforgettable.
