SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome

I love history, but many history books can be a chore to trudge through, with people, places, and events being served up like a vegetable you don't like but know is good for you. No so with Mary Beard's, SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome. While there are certainly more in-depth examinations of ancient Rome, for someone like me who is not a history scholar, this was the perfect introduction to a subject about which I knew very little. Easy to read, conversational in style, and thoroughly unpretentious, SPQR is Roman history for the masses. The highest compliment I can give Mary Beard's 50-year effort is that she's whetted my appetite for more—I'm off now to read Robert Graves' I, Claudius.
