Selected Short Stories

★★★★☆
Selected Short Stories is at once lush, vivid, tense, startlingly refreshing, and frequently overwrought. Often, the stories seemed to take a backseat to the immensely rich detail, and, as a result, I found that the middle stretch of stories in this collection blurred into one great heap of beautifully labored prose. Standouts are "Barn Burning," "Two Soldiers," "A Rose for Emily," "Dry September," "Red Leaves," "Mountain Victory," and "Race at Morning."
