High Desert Elegy is a short collection of stories and poems (the former better than the latter) that I picked up at a gift shop in Joshua Tree, California. Vail’s sparse, shadowy, evocative, and sometimes brutal imagery will help you sustain that Southern California desert vibe you’re not quite ready to let go of as you read it on the flight back home.
