Normally, I'm a big Chuck Palahniuk fan, but I just couldn't get into this book. In fact, it was a slog of a read, but I pushed through to the end anyway. Overall, I found it slow and tedious, and, despite all the hype and press that surrounded the book upon its 2005 release, I failed to find most of the individual stories or the events of the overall plot compelling—or, as seemed to be the goal, shocking. These stories would probably have fared better published as a collection, rather than clumsily woven together into a greater narrative. This was especially problematic given that every story had the same voice and tone, despite being told by nineteen different characters. I'm not suggesting it would have been easy or manageable to tell nineteen stories with nineteen voices, but if that's the premise, then the premise must be taken all the way.
