A fellow poet at The Dusty Bookshelf's monthly Open Mic Poetry Night graciously allowed me to read Call Me Lindsey, a work-in-progress poetic memoir that, in her words, “captures the key moments and feelings that together explain the struggles I faced growing up in an abusive home.” To get a sense of what Lindsey faces head-on in these pages, the book comes with a “Trigger Warning For Heavy Topics: Abandonment, Abuse (Physical, psychological, and sexual), Eating disorders, Mental Health disorders, Neglect, Self-harm, Suicide.” Through poems, songs, short stories, and rants, Lindsey takes us through the last ten years of her life—from an upbringing with eight siblings, no education, and no real contact with the outside world to being placed in the foster care system to eventually pursuing a college degree. That Call Me Lindsey even exists is a testament to Lindsey’s indomitable spirit, and I hope for her sake, and for the sake of those who would find encouragement in her journey, this book finds a wider audience.
