Unicorn Theatre
When Design Ranch stepped away from creating Unicorn Theatre's annual season artwork, my brother, the theatre's marketing director, arranged a meeting with artistic director Cynthia Levin and associate artistic director Ian Crawford. We hit it off, and I was given considerable freedom to explore a new direction for the 2020–21 season.
The protests following George Floyd's murder had begun the week before, and the imagery of protest and agitprop was very much on my mind. I developed two concepts, one influenced by the classic album covers of Blue Note Records and the other drawing on the raw, provocative character of street art. I was particularly excited about the latter, which offered the challenge of giving seven very different plays a cohesive visual identity while allowing each its own personality.
I'd completed poster designs for all seven productions, with four taken through final, press-ready artwork, before the pandemic forced the Unicorn to rethink its season. They shifted to virtual performances, replacing some productions with others better suited to the format. The posters were never printed or displayed as intended. It was a disappointing end to a project I'd taken on pro bono and thoroughly enjoyed—but at least the work finally has a home in my portfolio.
