Harris: New Morning Pulse
Sometimes the strongest contribution isn’t creating the image—it’s creating the language that gives the image its voice.
Unlike several earlier record packages I’d designed, New Morning Pulse began with photography supplied by the band: quiet, cinematic images of a woman sitting alone at a diner counter. The photographs already carried much of the album’s atmosphere, so my role shifted from image-maker to system builder.
Rather than compete with the photography, I developed a visual identity around it. A custom logo, restrained typography, and a carefully balanced color palette established the album’s character, while translucent geometric forms introduced rhythm and movement without overwhelming the stillness of the photographs.
The central organizing element became a single horizontal line terminating in an arrow. It begins on the front cover, continues across the spine, wraps around the tray card, and reappears beneath the transparent jewel tray—resolving on both sides of the tray card. Instead of treating the CD package as a collection of separate panels, I approached it as a single continuous object, allowing one graphic gesture to connect every surface.
Looking back, what interests me most isn’t any individual graphic element but the way they work together. This project taught me that design doesn’t always need to be expressive on its own. Sometimes its role is quieter—to create structure, establish rhythm, and give existing images a cohesive visual voice.
